About the Valuation Summit 2019

With a population of over 1.25 billion India is one of the biggest and fastest growing economies in the world - standards and professionalism are of significant importance. In the absence of standards of valuation, the valuation is more on an art based on the professional experience of the valuer rather than a science based on empirical studies and logics. At present there are no prescribed standards and codes for valuation in India, in many cases the valuation lacks the uniformity and generally accepted global valuation practices. Though the value of a business can be objectively determined employing valuation approaches, this value is still subjective, dependent on buyer and seller expectations and subsequent negotiations and use of professional judgment is an essential component of estimating value. New laws regarding Valuation are being discussed and is in the process of being drafted by government bodies. At the summit, we will have a discussion on the requirement and the importance of these laws. We will try to find out how these proposed laws will impact the current practices of the valuation profession.

We have invited experts from regulators, corporations and corporate affairs ministry to discuss the future of Valuation in India. We also intend to invite Private Equity and Startups professionals to discuss the significance of valuation for Startups. We are expecting a 200+ audience to be part of this summit.

Prior to this, Amit was based out of Chicago where he managed $1.5B spend for Exelon, the largest electric Utility in US. He was responsible for maximizing share-holder returns. Rajesh is the Founder and Managing Partner of Equanimity Investments, after having made 22 angel investments since 2007 and having had a ringside view of the overall startup ecosystem over the past decade. He is an active member of Mumbai Angels and is also the Founding and current Chair of the Corporate Reporting Users’ Forum. He is a TiE Charter Member and is the Co-Chair of the FinTech Special Interest Group at TiE Mumbai. He is a member of the Steering Committee of NASSCOM 10,000 Startups. Umakanta Panigrahi is a managing director in the Mumbai office of Duff & Phelps and is part of the Valuation Advisory Services. He has over 10 years of experience in financial advisory services including valuation advisory services, equity research and credit research. Umakanta has managed a range of valuation and consulting services including business valuation, portfolio valuation, intellectual property valuation, purchase price allocation and impairment assessment, financial instrument valuations and other IFRS and USGAAP related engagements.

Dr. Basu is a scholarly academician with a background of thirty-four years corporate experience mainly in finance, strategic planning and IT enablement functions. His last two corporate positions were that of the Group Controller and CFO of two large MNCs of India. Presently he is a full time Senior Professor and Chairperson of MBA (Law) of NMIMS University School of Business Management. and engaged in several research and consulting activities. His current areas of research include professional scepticism, Industry 4.0, blockchain, artificial intelligence and digital transformation. He is a fellow member of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. He was awarded Ph.D. degree by the Calcutta University in 1999. Nandita is a Chartered Accountant and a Cost Accountant with over 24 years of professional experience with Deloitte in India in the valuations space. She has performed innumerable valuations for various purposes – deal, regulatory, disputes, accounting etc. She has developed expertise in business valuations especially merger valuations and has been associated with valuations in almost all industries viz. banking and financial services especially life insurance and real estate, manufacturing, consumer business, TMT, healthcare and life sciences including pharma and agro chemicals, infrastructure, IT and ITes etc. In addition to doing business valuation, she has developed and leads the practice of valuation of intangibles, purchase price allocation and other valuations under US GAAP, IFRS and IndAS.

Yagnesh has worked for Hinduja Group (their IT/ ITES biz, now known as Hinduja Global Solutions - HGS), Entertainment World Developers P Ltd, part of the Atul Ruia led Phoenix Mills Group and MT Educare (brand name - Mahesh Tutorials), a listed education services player, now part of Essel Group. He has also worked as 'India Operating Partner’ for Bessemer Venture Partners (BVP), a top ranked US based Global VC/PE firm. Rajan is a graduate in Commerce from the University of Delhi and is a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
